Biology is a discipline that pursues an understanding of the principles of life at various levels, from molecules, cells, and organisms to global ecology. We designed our programs to meet the educational standard of world-class institutions. Each course is composed of lectures and laboratory work in order to meet the highest standard of learning, and students are introduced to current trends in diverse research areas to adapt to the fast development of biological sciences. We aim to supply human resources to the basic and applied fields of life science by teaching with our course programs, which is composed of mandatory and elective courses, for helping each student to develop their unique abilities.
The biological science is vast and interdisciplinary because it tries to understand the mechanisms of all living things and to understand the interactions between the life and its environment. It is branched to animal sciences, plant sciences and microbiology depending on the objects it investigates, and branches to genetics, developmental biology, molecular biology, physiology, cell biology, structural biology and genetic engineering according to its scientific approaches and subjects. Currently, there are 17 faculty members in the Department of Biology, Division of Life Science of College of Natural Science, at YonseiUniversity. Their specific research fields of interest include genetics, molecular microbiology, environmental microbiology, molecular cell biology, developmental biology, immunology, neurobiology, neuroscience, molecular glycobiology, plant cell physiology, plant molecular biology, plant genomics, plant molecular physiology, plant developmental biology, molecular cancer biology, molecular epigenetics, and structural biology. They give lectures in the college and graduate school, and supervise researches in their own laboratories.
The career pathways of the students extend from continuing their studies in graduate schools in Korea and abroad, to serving as professionals in various national institutes, biotech companies, pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, or serving as teachers. For advanced studies,it is desirable to take as many courses in the biological major. Student with an outstanding undergraduate performance can enter the graduate school by a brief interview without the entrance examination, which is for testing their basic knowledge in biology. For students who plan to study abroad, we recommend consultations with professors in the program to get advices for their own self-preparation. For teaching careers, students have to take appropriate teaching courses. Besides of these tracks, many graduates are also serving in various fields as renowned leaders.
