Introduction

The English Department has been one of the founding blocks at Yonsei University and has produced many scholars, writers and outstanding members of our society. The undergraduate program of the English Department at Yonsei offers courses that provide both the core of a liberal education in the humanities and, for those who intend to pursue careers in teaching and scholarship, the basis for advanced study of English literature and linguistics. These courses range from surveys of British and American literature and linguistics to advanced courses in particular periods, genres, literary issues and all major fields of linguistics. Our literature faculty, well-known for its range of approaches to literature, explore such diverse research and theoretical issues as historicism, psychoanalysis, feminism, poststructuralism, and postcolonialism. What also distinguishes the English literature program at Yonsei is our concentration in a few key areas including medieval and early modern literature, Shakespeare, and the novel with special emphasis on race and ethnicity. Many of our faculty members are actively participating in the Institute of Literary Translation and are receiving world- and nation-wide recognition, especially for translating Korean literature into English and Shakespeare into Korean. Our linguistics faculty focuses on the fields of English phonetics, phonology, syntax and semantics both in synchronic and diachronic perspectives. Moreover, the English language is studied in relation to English and American history, society, and culture as well. The English Department also offers doctoral and master's programs in English literature and linguistics. The Graduate Program in literature offers professional training in various areas of literary and cultural history, theory, and criticism; the linguistics program provides major theoretical tools for a deep understanding of the various aspects of the English language.
