The Department of Applied Statistics was established in 1967 to conduct research in probability and statistical theory, to work with others in the application of statistics to investigate economics, finance and marketing, and to teach statistical theory and practice on the undergraduate and graduate levels.
From the beginning, the department has been known for the high quality of its faculty and the diversity of its interests. Faculty members have contributed many statistical articles to books and journals in theoretical and applied statistics. The alumni of the department have been playing an important role in diverse areas including finance, marketing, computer science, mathematics, industrial engineering, etc.
Recently the advent of information technology has compelled our department to pursue interests in applied fields such as risk management, customer relation management and information theory. Although the department concentrates on information theory, risk management, data mining and biostatistics, it is also a leader in statistical consulting and statistical education. |
